2015 Hottest Year on Record

Scientists reported Wednesday that 2015 was the hottest year in the historical record by far, breaking a mark set only the year before — a burst of heat that has continued into the new year and is roiling weather patterns all over the world. In the contiguous United States, the year was the secondwarmest on record, punctuated by a December that was both the hottest and the wettest since recordkeeping began. One result has been a wave of unusual winter floods coursing down the Mississippi River watershed. Scientists started predicting a global temperature record months ago, in part because an El Niño weather pattern, one of the largest in a century, is releasing an immense amount of heat from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere. But the bulk of the recordsetting heat, they say, is a consequence of the longterm planetary warming caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases. “The whole system is warming up, relentlessly,” said Gerald A. Meehl, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. It will take a few more years to know for certain, but the backtoback records of 2014 and 2015 may have put the world back onto a trajectory of rapid global warming, after a period of relatively slow warming dating to the last powerful El Niño, in 1998. Politicians attempting to claim that greenhouse gases are not a problem seized on that slow period to argue that “global warming stopped in 1998,” with these claims and similar statements reappearing recently on the Republican presidential campaign trail. Statistical analysis suggested all along that the claims were false, and that the slowdown was, at most, a minor blip in an inexorable trend, perhaps caused by a temporary increase in the absorption of heat by the Pacific Ocean. “Is there any evidence for a pause in the longterm global warming rate?” said Gavin A. Schmidt, head of NASA’s climatescience unit, the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, in Manhattan. “The answer is no. That was true before last year, but it’s much more obvious now.” Michael E. Mann, a climate scientist at Pennsylvania State University, calculated that if the global climate were not warming, the odds of setting two backtoback record years would be remote, about one chance in every 1,500 pairs of years. Given the reality that the planet is warming, the odds become far higher, about one chance in 10, according to Dr. Mann’s calculations. Two American government agencies — NASA, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and NOAA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration — compile separate analyses of the global temperature, based upon thousands of measurements from weather stations, ships and ocean buoys scattered around the world. Meteorological agencies in Britain and Japan do so, as well. The agencies follow slightly different methods to cope with problems in the data, but obtain similar results. The American agencies released figures on Wednesday showing that 2015 was the warmest year in a global record that began, in their data, in 1880. British scientists released figures showing 2015 as the warmest in a record dating to 1850. The Japan Meteorological Agency had already released preliminary results showing 2015 as the warmest year in a record beginning in 1891. On Jan. 7, NOAA reported that 2015 was the secondwarmest year on record, after 2012, for the lower 48 United States. That land mass covers less than 2 percent of the surface of the Earth, so it is not unusual to have a slight divergence between United States temperatures and those of the planet as a whole. The end of the year was especially remarkable in the United States, with virtually every state east of the Mississippi River having a record warm December, often accompanied by heavy rains. A warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor, and an intensification of rainstorms was one of the fundamental predictions made by climate scientists decades ago as a consequence of human emissions. That prediction has come to pass, with the rains growing more intense across every region of the United States, but especially so in the East. The term global warming is generally taken to refer to the temperature trend at the surface of the planet, and those are the figures reported by the agencies on Wednesday. Some additional measurements, of shorter duration, are available for the ocean depths and the atmosphere above the surface, both generally showing an inexorable longterm warming trend. Most satellite measurements of the lower and middle layers of the atmosphere show 2015 to have been the third or fourthwarmest year in a 37 year record, and scientists said it was slightly surprising that the huge El Niño had not produced a greater warming there. They added that this could yet happen in 2016. When temperatures are averaged at a global scale, the differences between years are usually measured in fractions of a degree. In the NOAA data set, 2015 was 0.29 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than 2014, the largest jump ever over a previous record. NASA calculated a slightly smaller figure, but still described it as an unusual oneyear increase. The intense warmth of 2015 contributed to a heat wave in India last spring that turns out to have been the secondworst in that country’s history, killing an estimated 2,500 people. The longterm global warming trend has exacted a severe toll from extreme heat, with eight of the world’s 10 deadliest heat waves occurring since 1997. Only rough estimates of heat deaths are available, but according to figures from the Center for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters, in Brussels, the toll over the past two decades is approaching 140,000 people, with most of those deaths occurring during a European heat wave in 2003 and a Russian heat wave in 2010. The strong El Niño has continued into 2016, raising the possibility that this year will, yet again, set a global temperature record. The El Niño pattern is also disturbing the circulation of the atmosphere, contributing to worldwide weather extremes that include a drought in southern Africa, threatening the food supply of millions. Based on the analysis, 2015 year is considered the hottest year in the history of the climate records. Climate change has exceeded the symbolic threshold. At the summit in Paris, nations prepared an agreement on the further reduce of greenhouse gas emissions. However, this may become insufficient facing the problems that humanity got. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades is unlikely to stop the continuing rise in world temperature, in addition, now it became clear that, despite the efforts of the countries, participants of the Kyoto Protocol, the concentration of carbon dioxide continues to grow at a tremendous speed. Furthermore, the opportunity for the developing countries to trade their greenhouse gas quota again proved that economics benefits are also getting extracted from the world climate problems. Environment and economics finally should start working together in order to have the balance in the current situation.

I believe that the statistics discussed in this article provide enough evidence to prove that long-term global warming is real, even though it may not be how people expect it to look. I found these results pretty alarming, and although I do not have much knowledge on climate change, I hope more countries around the world begin to take action against companies that are causing these negative externalities.
I'm not surprised that 2015 was found to be the hottest year on record so far. You can even see by the chart included in the article that all of the "warmest years on record" happened since the start of the new millennium. One of the consequences of these warmer years that wasn't mentioned happened in 2005- a year that was on the chart- was that of Hurricane Katrina. It was one of the worst hurricanes (both literally and financially speaking) that man had experienced at the time, and cost millions of dollars in damages. Not only that, but people are still being affected by the storm a little over 10 years later. It's known that it's nearly impossible for humans to stop all of the damage they are doing right now and reverse everything, so I guess that only brings up 1 question for me: what's going to happen now?

The statistical results of four different meteorological agencies located in three different countries concludes an alarming global climate crisis that has rapidly increased in a matter of years. While the El Niño has contributed to the record breaking heatwave of 2015 as measured on the surface of the Earth, the overall climate change affecting the lower and middle layers is likely to increase through 2016. As the Earth's surface increases combined with the continued El Niño pattern, countries around the world are facing larger economical issues as their citizens must rethink human emissions of greenhouse gases in an attempt to reduce further damage. Without any reform to the current global climate the number of deaths caused by these natural disasters are bound to increase, issuing fear in humans across the planet as we ultimately rely upon meteorological data collection to determine what the future of the planet will become. The climate has become a global economic issue that cannot be ignored as it has been in previous and current campaigns within the United States. As this issue stretches worldwide it will become a financial and economic burden worldwide, and the issue needs to be resolved or we will suffer well beyond environmental damage.
It amazes me that 2015 was the hottest recorded year on historical record, breaking a record set only the year before - 2014 - and temperatures are continuing to rise, and yet there are still people who disagree that global warming exists. The fact that we are experiencing these record high temperatures throughout the year, not just during the summer, is an alarming trend that does not appear to be stopping.While the record breaking heatwave in 2015 was due in part to the El Niño pattern, the article does say that the majority of the heat trend was a consequence of long-term planetary warming caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases.With this thought in mind, how can we not believe that we are doing more harm than good to the planet and that global warming does not exist? 2015 and the continuing warming weather patterns should be a wake-up call to all of us that something must be done to curb emissions.

It is very surprising that 2015 was the hottest year in the history of climate record. Since many people were disagreeing about the fact of global warming, I did not even believe in global warming is actually becoming the serious problem. As of the research shows, four of the different association in different countries showed the evidence that 2015 is the hottest year and the average temperature is actually rising compared to 2014. Global Warming is now a serious problem that people cannot ignore it. Moreover, these association is predicting that 2016 will set a new global temperature record, and threaten the food supply of millions due to drought. Therefore, as the problem of global warming stretches, the countries will also get affected in many different aspects. For example, it will affect their economics as the country’s agricultural supply decreases. In order to not let this happen, countries need to take the problem serious and come up with solution. Otherwise, it will get worse and worse in the future.

The article talks about how we have had two back to back years recorded as hotest in the history. Although some politicians deny it global warming is happening and should not be avoided. The rise in temperature can be noticed every year. It is predicted that 2016 will follow the trend as well. Countries need to come up with solutions for this problem and take it seriously as majority of this is caused by human activities

Global Warming is now and has always been a very serious problem that people cannot ignore it any longer. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the coming decades is unlikely to stop the continuing rise in world temperature. While the record breaking heatwave in 2015 was due in part to the El Niño pattern, the article does say that the majority of the heat trend was a consequence of long-term planetary warming caused by human emissions of greenhouse gases. Four of the different association in different countries showed the evidence that 2015 is the hottest year and the average temperature is actually rising compared to 2014. Environment and economics should start working together in order to have the balance in the current situation. Without any reform to the current global climate the number of deaths caused by these natural disasters are bound to increase.
Addtional data I would like to see:
1. Some elaboration on what might have caused the "blip" after 1998.
2. Information on heat deaths over time.
3. What makes those back-to--back warm years so unlikely.
The basic picture of global warming is easy to understand but these statistics are less so. XD And that's not your fault at all. If anyone could recommend books. places for research, etc., I'd really appreciate it.
The effects of human activity on the environment are not disputable, in my opinion. Of course the Earth goes through periods of extended warmth and cold climates. The progression in climate change that we are currently seeing is an alarming trend. Studies show that the hottest year on record was 2015; and the hottest year on record before that? 2014. Consecutive years defined by record breaking, average, temperatures, can be connected to the rate at which we are growing as a society. Year after year, our population continues to grow, and with that, so does the amount of chemical bi-products/toxic gases that are released in the environment. The ozone layer and other earthly protectants are being depleted, as a result of human behavior and emissions. I believe that we have already made such a negative geological footprint, and therefore cannot reverse the damage we have already done. In theory, if economists and environmentalists could find a balance between renewable energy source and fossil fuel usage, we could slow the progression of environmental damage.
The fact that 2015 was the hottest year in our history should give light to the fact that global warming isn't going anywhere unless we do something about it. It was the hottest back to back years and it is showing on the east coast with warm weather in the middle of winter. We aren't experiencing a lot of snow we are getting heavy rainstorms. The strong start of El Nino in 2016 is on pace for another record breaking year. It is disturbing the circulation of the atmosphere, contributing to worldwide weather extremes like the drought in southern Africa, threatening the food supply of millions. The change of cold to hot weather on and off everyday just shows how much of a problem we really have.
Again, another article that does not surprise me at all. By saying that, I mean that we have seen so many facts and numbers that are telling us we are not in the right path and we need to start making a change. It is not surprising to see that 2015 is one of the warmest years ever. Changes need to start be done in order to be able to stop with global warming, if not, we are going to reach a point where there is no turn back and the fight against global warming is going to be over. I still do not understand how there is people that say that everything is ok, and there is no global warming, also for their main purpose of campaign elections, when it is clear enough that the world is sick and that we need to put effort in trying to heal it. The numbers seem low, as a change in 1º C seems nothing but an increase in 1ºC is pretty alarming and if we keep in this path, the global temperature is going to keep going up. In general, numbers seem not alarming but they are, and actions need to be done to avoid the effects of global warming.
