Floating Wind Turbines

There’s roughly enough wind off the West Coast to power all of the U.S. Alla Weinstein is determined to harness as much of it as she can. Weinstein is chief executive officer of Principle Power, a Seattle company that has developed a ballast system that buoys wind turbines so they don’t have to be bolted to the seabed. On Feb. 5, Principle received approval from the U.S. Department of the Interior to build a 30-megawatt floating wind farm off Oregon’s coast, the nation’s first in the Pacific Ocean.
Wind speeds are faster and more consistent at sea than on land. Companies seeking to take advantage of that were limited by the need to attach turbines to the ocean floor. Principle Power’s technology removes that constraint. It’s “what happened in the oil and gas industry back in the ’70s, when it moved from fixed foundations to floating foundations,” Weinstein says.
Fixed-foundation turbines require more permits. They’re also more likely to incite protests, such as those that have delayed the Cape Wind project off Massachusetts and a wind farm off Scotland that Donald Trump says will ruin the views from his golf resort there. Floating turbines, which are held in place by anchors, can be placed 20 miles offshore—“out of sight, out of mind,” as Weinstein puts it.
Principle installed a floating 2Mw turbine built by Vestas (VWS:GR) about 3 miles off the coast of Portugal in 2011, a project that may reach a total capacity of 150Mw. The company is also pursuing deals in the U.K. and Asia. The Oregon wind farm, with an estimated cost of $200 million, will consist of five 6Mw Siemens (SI) turbines about 15 miles off the coast and is expected to be hooked up to the grid via an underwater cable in 2017.

A 12Mw floating project is slated to begin delivering electricity the same year to Maine, where the public utility commission in January approved a plan submitted by Maine Aqua Ventus, a partnership among Emera (EMA:CN) of Nova Scotia, Cianbro of Maine, and Maine Prime Technologies, a University of Maine spinoff. The partners built and tested a one-eighth-scale model last year. The next step calls for placing two 6Mw turbines about 12 miles off Maine’s coast on platforms fashioned from concrete. (Principle uses steel.) The companies will save tens of millions of dollars because they won’t have to rent jack-up barges and cranes used to install fixed-foundation turbines, says Habib Dagher, director of the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures & Composites Center, who’s spearheading the project. Dagher envisions a future in which “every 20 years we can tow the unit back to shore and put a next-generation turbine on top of it.”
Walt Musial, a researcher at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory, estimates that there’s more than 900 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity along the Pacific coast of the U.S. That’s about the same as the country’s installed power capacity. The cost of deploying fixed-bottom turbines is about $4 or $5 per megawatt-hour, he says, vs. $6 per megawatt-hour for floating systems. The gap may eventually disappear. “We’re talking about single-unit prototypes that are still very early-stage,” Musial says. “It’s like the first flat-screen TV. It’s very expensive to build the first one.”
The bottom line: Floating turbines will reap some of the 900 gigawatts of wind capacity available off the Pacific coast of the U.S.

I find these floating wind turbines to be quite a refreshing idea. The idea of a floating wind turbine with the same concept that the oil and gas industry had. Out at sea the winds are very strong so the amount of energy to be produced will be more consistent.We need to take advantage of the vast amount of megawatts that can be produced from off coast winds. So they say these floating turbines call for more permits, but at the end of the day we will have next to zero pollution from running these devices. I hope to see this put into place when I'm 65, similar to what my grandparents are seeing with tv's. This is definitely one of the more rational ideas that I have seen in my lifetime, that is practical for the future years.

The fact that there is enough wind power off the west coast to power all of the U.S. is remarkable. To know something like this and not invest time and money into researching and building these wind turbines would be a huge mistake. Now that it is possible to create floating turbines, we can expand our thoughts on this technology. It may be an expensive project now (but what isn't when dealing with sustainability,) but, once the prototypes are finalized this can be a sustainable form of energy. I agree with Jeff's term rational because this does really seem like the most feasible option when trying to capture offshore winds. I can honestly say I am excited for these turbines to be installed all over the world. If one has to make choices for the good of humanity what is more important, Donald Trump's view from his golf course, or sustainable energy for the world?

It would be an excellent idea to substitute current wind turbines with floating wind turbines. One reason for this is that every 20 years a unit can be towed back and be replaced by a next generation turbine. This would also financially benefit the companies big time as they will save millions every year. This is of course a sustainable source of energy development which is good for our environment. The initial cost for floating wind turbines is no doubt high but new inventions always cost alot of money. But once there is a breakthrough, with reseach, development and economies of scale, the average cost becomes lower than the older options. Of course there will be some people, like Donald Trump, opposing this marvelous idea. But we have to think whether we care more about Donald trumps golf course's view, or the climate of our world which effects everybody, including Donald Trump himself.

Alternative forms of energy have become extremely relevant due to the constant energy crisis. The floating turbine idea seems to offer a just explanation for their existence. However, when embarking on a project ,especially one pertaining to energy, it must be checked from all angles. Often times the methods that we assume are more advanced and sustainable are quite the opposite. I am not ruling out the proposed idea just making sure they are built for functionality and not as an environmental muzzle. Not having to bolt the structures to the sea floor brings about obvious benefit for surrounding habitat. A cost benefit analysis must be done in great detail about this project. Taking into consideration the potential mistakes, failures, and flat out cost of production. When I say cost I don't mean just the businesses dollar cost but the lost resources as a result of the turbines production. Technology may not be the answer to our problems but in our current system these advancements may be able to help.

It's innovations such as these that make me optimistic for the future. I agree with most of the other comments on this post that it is a mistake to miss out on such an investment when we have the technology, resources, and enough harness-able wind for this source of power to offer energy to the entire country. I believe that the small-scale project is the perfect way to begin such strides - it gives us the opportunity to observe what problems there may be with these, tow them back into land and expand on them (as mentioned in the article) and all in all perfect the design and efficiency.

These wind turbines are incredible! They should be the future of energy but sadly, this technology will be hidden from public eye until we run out of oil and gas or start getting very low at least. It is such a simple concept really that has been known for many years, it is a shame we still use coal for electric power plants. The only reason these turbines are not available yet is because they have no way of making money off them yet, it is sustainable energy! I firmly believe that once the most money possible has been made from fossil fuels, we will finally make the change to resources like this.- Stephen Doerrer
